Arriving in Slovenia was love at first sight. It was a surprisingly warm and sunny day in September 2014, perfect to be welcomed by the sight of the Alps as I exited the Ljubljana airport. The drive towards the center was beautiful. As a biologist, one of my favorite things about Slovenia is how green it is. I was also impressed by how the locals are so active and always enjoy a good hike. I came to Slovenia to pursue a PhD under the young researcher's grant working at ZRC SAZU. At the same time, an old Slovenian friend became my partner and we decided to start a family. We both agreed that Slovenia is the best place to raise a child. I deeply appreciate how safe Slovenia is for everybody, especially women and children. I am sure that the safety we enjoy is rooted in social equality, and it would be sad to see Slovenia become more socially stratified in the next years. In this era of globalization and Americanization, I hope Slovenia keeps it charms.
