Association of Slovenians in Liechtenstein, President

In the 1960s and 1970s, 70 Slovenians moved to Lichtenstein, mostly young girls who were then hired in restaurants and the industry sector. Some of them returned to Slovenia, while others married and stayed in Lichtenstein.

The Association of Slovenians in Liechtenstein was founded in 1994, even though some Slovenian associations had already been active in Switzerland and Austria for several decades. Today, the association has 36 members.  To preserve the Slovenian language and Slovenian culture, we organize various social and sporting events. We really like to visit our homeland. This year, we went on a four-day trip across the Dolenjska region, where we visited several cultural and historic attractions; we were accompanied by some of our colleagues from Lichtenstein.

In 1997, we managed to organise a remedial class of the Slovenian language together with the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Bern, which is attended by many children and members of our association. We have established extremely friendly relations with the embassy in Bern, the ambassador Franc Mikša, and the Honorary Consul of Slovenia in Lichtenstein Donat Marxer.

Many members of the association have lived in Lichtenstein for almost 50 years and have been monitoring the events and progress in Slovenia over the last 25 years with great interest. Our meetings are full of lively discussions and exchanges of opinions about the progress and events in the homeland.

In cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia, our association will organize the main cultural event for Slovenians living in Switzerland and The Principality of Liechtenstein, on 20th February 2016 (in light of the earlier celebrated Prešeren Day), and a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Slovenian independence. We would like to invite all Slovenians from Lichtenstein, Switzerland and Austria (Vorarlberg) to attend the event where we will celebrate the silver anniversary of Slovenian independence, which we were yearning for so long, with great pride.
